Trainspotting in the UK, June 2025

A view of York’s big station from the street in front of the National Railway Museum.

My spouse and I recently spent a week in the UK, partly for business, and partly for pleasure. We attended a rail safety conference in York, which took place in UK’s National Railway Museum. Here are some photos from the museum, and also from a field technical visit hosted by UK’s rail infrastructure provider, Network Rail.

One view of the National Railway Museum’s 7mm (O gauge, or thereabouts) model railway display.
Another view of the 7mm layout.
Around the turntable in the National Railway Museum. What the British might call a second generation diesel, and then a steam locomotive that looks startlingly like Thomas the Tank Engine.
To the left—another of Thomas’ real-life inspirations, with major road steam power in the background.
The view from the gift shop, which boasted a respectable selection of model railways in N, OO, and 7mm gauges.
During the field technical visit of the railway safety conference I attended, we were shown an exemplarily safe grade crossing (level crossing to the UK and the rest of the global rail industry), and at least six trains passed by. This one snuck up on the conference group during an explanation of its technology.
Local passenger service in rural Yorkshire, as seen from another exemplary grade crossing, this one on a private, heavily trafficked agricultural road.

[…] I traveled to the United Kingdom in June, and while I was there, I covered the back-to-back International Level Crossing and Trespassing Awareness Day (ILCAD and TRESPAD) conferences for Trains.com. The conferences were held in the National Rail Museum, a fitting place for a gathering of rail industry professionals. (Photos here) […]
