On My Bench: De-Zombifying the PE Box Motor With Real Window Glass

Trevor Marshall has been shaming me into completing the Pacific Electric box motor, recently suggesting microscope slide slip covers for window glazing. The slip covers are essentially .015” glass, which cuts easily with a cheap diamond-tipped scribe and a straight edge. The glass has a convincing sheen and tends to stay perfectly flat, unlike the various clear plastic alternatives. Per Trevor’s counsel, I cut them oversize and secured them to the inside of the car body with Krystal Kleer. Railroad models with unglazed windows look zombified and not fully alive to me, and I am finding this step breathed new life into the project.
